Digimon: The Movie

There has been only one Digimon movie, and it was made up of three mini-movies tied together by the narration of Kari. They weren't as popular (at least where I lived) as the Pokemon movies; my family went opening night and the theater was half-empty. The following are plot summeries of each part (they don't have titles (at least that I know) (no spoilers if you haven't seen them) and my opinions (1-5 stars, high is good).

Part I: 8 years ago

Summary: The movie opens with Kari explaining who she is and that she is a Digidestined. it also mentioned a new character, Willis, who is important to the movie. Then Kari starts to tell how she, her brother, and the other Season 1 Digidestined first learned about Digimon. This is hinted at by the television series, but never shown on-screen. It happens 4 years before Season 1, and 8 years before Season 2.

Late one night, Kari notices something odd about her dad's computer. She and Tai see an egg come out of the computer. Tai thinks its just a dream, but, when the two wake up the next morning, the egg is still there and it hatches.

Tai and Kari attempt to befriend and care for the baby Digimon, and it Digivolves to it's In-Training form, Koromon (note: narrator-Kari tells us this is not the same Koromon Tai meets in the Digital World). After some funny scenes involving Koromon and the Kamiya family cat, Koromon digivolves again, to a Agumon that is much larger than normal, and who decided to take Kari for a walk.

By the way, fans of Season 1 should keep an eye open for the other 6 Digidestined. You can find them all.

Opinion: It's cute, it explains part of the show, but you aren't gonna care unless you're a fan.Rating:***

Part II: 4 years ago

Summary: This part is set soon after the Digidestined return from the Digital World (right after Season 1). Izzy is surfin' the 'net, and runs into a virus. Unlike your average e-mail virus, this one is part Digimon, and apparently thinks computer data is good eating. On the advice of "Willis from America", Izzy dashes over to Tai's house and tries to rally the Digidestined. Hard to do, as Mimi's in Hawaii, Matt and T.K. are visiting their grandmother, who apparently has the only house in the country without Internet access, Joe is taking a test, Sora is 'not speaking' to Tai, and Kari refuses to leave a friend's birthday party.

Anyways, despite the fact the phone company was one of the first to fall to the virus, Tai and Izzy manage to tell Matt and T.K. to go to the nearest Internet connection. The reason is simple: Gennai is able to upload Digimon onto the Internet, but it's kind of pointless, unless the Digidestined (with Digivice) is there to help them Digivolve. Anyways, the virus/Digimon keeps Digivolving, and, when Tai and Izzy (plus Matt and T.K., who have invaded the local barber shop to borrow the owner's computer) have their Digimon attack the virus, it Digivolves to Mega level and knocks out Patamon and Tentomon. MetalGarurumon and WarGreymon set off in pursuit of the virus, who decides the Pentagon's computers are a good place to cause havock. Oh, yeah, did I mention a whole lot of kids are watching this, via Internet, and are e-mailing Tai and Izzy, slowing their connection? Remember that (there will be a test during Season 2).

Review: This is great! Great music, relevence to the show (watch Season 2, the events in the movie are mentioned.), cool animation. The only thing I wish they would have done is give the other Digidestined a chance to do more (you see some shots of them, but they have no direct action.). Oh, Season 2 fans, look for shreenshots of Yolei during the last few battle sequences.

Part III: present day

Summary: First Kari introduces the new Digidestined (for the first time for an old-school fan like me) and gives the standard update on the old Digidestined.

Kari and T.K. are visiting Mimi in New York, when they see a kid who turns out to be Willis and a Digimon (This is very important. It marks Willis as the first non-Japanese Digidestined.) battling another Digimon. Kari and T.K. attempt to help and drive off the other Digimon, but Willis just wants to be left alone. Kari and T.K. contact the others and agree to meet in Colorado, where Willis is heading, to try to figure out what the heck is going on. Kari and T.K. catch a train, leaving Davis, Yolei and Cody to figure out a way to get across an ocean. Luckily, Yolei's uncle is a travel agent, and they manage to get resonably close to Colorado.

Eventually the group resorts to hitchiking (Note to readers: hitchiking is stupid. Don't do it, unless you have a small cute monster friend who can Digivole to a very tough scary-looking monster friend.), and they happen to run into Willis. DemiVeemon (pretending to be a stuffed animal, as it standard Digimon travel protocol.) realizes Willis has a Digimon with him, and the group attempts to make friends. Thanks to a pizza guy, the group returns to Willis's home. Willis explains what happened (He had two Digimon, but he tried to create more. You get Infermon, the Digimon/virus that ate the Internet. The virus managed to infect one of Willis's Digimon, and apparently is now following him around, making life difficult.) and Davis volunteers to help. Willis at first rejects the offer, but after talking with his Digimon, Terriermon, he accepts. A battle with the virus-ed Digimon ensued, with T.K. and Kari showing up at the dramatically-appropriate time.

Review: Not bad, not bad. For one, it has Kari in it, and she's my favorite character (It doesn't have my other favorite character, Ken, in it though. I guess I can't have everything.) However, I think this one appeals to fans of the show more than the general audience. Plus, I had trouble placing the context within the show. It had to happen while Ken is the Digimon Emperor or right after (in the short break between the Digimon Emperor's fall and the introduction of Arukenimon),as seen by the Digivolving used and the lack of Ken as a character, but why would T.K. and Kari be so unconcered as to go traveling? And why could Angewomon and MagnaAngemon Digivolve to Mega (or even Ultimate, for that matter?)? Is the restriction only in the Digital World?
