Story

Pokemon has a pretty loose-ended story: that's why so many of my friends like it for mindless cartoon fun.

Part 1

This is the part based on Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow video games. Join Ash Ketchum (with the assitance of Pikachu) as he attempts to become a Pokemon Master. To do that he needs to get eight Gym Badges, then win at the Pokemon League tournement at Indigo Plateau. Of course, in the typical serendipitous way these things go, he does a lot more than that. He meets Misty (in the first episode), another Pokemon trainer who specializes in Water Pokemon and has sworn to follow Ash to the ends of the Earth until he gets her a new bicycle (Pikachu blew up the first one), and Brock (in the fifth episode), a Gym Leader who wants to breed and raise Pokemon. Ash also gets his nose rubbed in the dirt several times by his rival, Gary. These episodes aired over a span of about 2 years, ending when Ash places in the top 16 at the Pokemon League.

Part 2

Know what? This is sorta like the whole "Alan and Ann" thing from Sailor Moon: it's filler made up by the writers while their source material catches up to the show. Ash and company run an errand for Professor Oak that brings them to the Orange Islands. While Brock decides to remain there to study Pokemon, Ash decides to compete in the Orange League, the local equvalent of the Pokemon League. He and Misty are joined by Tracey, a Pokemon Watcher (which is like a bird watcher, but with Pokemon, I guess...). Ash gets the prerequisite badges (4 this time) and actually beats the Orange League champion, which makes him the champion. Yay.

Part 3

Ash and company return to Professor Oak's with the item they were supoosed to have retrieved. Oak asks them to go on another errand, this time to Johto in the west. Added on to the fact that Gary mercilessly beat Ash in a Pokemon battle, Ash decided to get into the Johto League (another local Pokemon Leasgue eqivalent). He needs 8 badges (how original), so immediatly sets out, with Misty and a returned Brock (who apparently decided research didn't agree with him). Tracey remains behind to work with Professor Oak.

Currently Ash has three badges. His group is en route to Ecruteak City.
